Mulberry and weight loss

Just read about Mulberry Zuccarin as  weight loss aid. I have not tried it, but may get some mulberry tea and see if that helps me lose weight easier. Apparently mulberry tea is commonly drunk in Japan to help regulate blood sugar levels. I lived in Japan five years and do not know if I drank mulberry tea or not. I drank a lot of green tea which is great for appetite suppression. Mulberry promotes healthy blood sugar levels after a meal, which helps reduce insulin which in turn, reduces fat storage. Worth a shot!

Working out, and what to eat AFTER for maximum weight loss and fitness results

When you want to lose weight through healthy eating long with exercise, it's important to know what, and when, to eat. I told you in Effortless Weightloss  to always combine a quality protein and a fiber filled, vegetable carb together in every meal. Yes, carbs if eaten correctly can help you lose fat.

In fact, many body builders "cycle" their carbs depending on their workout, to build more muscle and lose more fat. To do this, simply add  small serving of a starchy carb (think brown rice, sweet potatoes, bananas) to two or three meals of your set of 5-6 small meals per day, on weight or resistance training days. The carbs give you more energy on high output days with lots of nutrition, fiber, and vitamins. It's  great incentive to work out, since you get to add in some starch!

On the other days, leave out breads and pasta for sure as without a muscle building workout to burn energy, starchy carbs are more likely to be stored as fat. Obviously you want to eat these meals before a workout.

There are two types of meals you want to consume after a workout, and each meal depends on the type of workout you have done.

Fitness expert Darin Steen says the meal after a resistance workout is the only meal that you ever want to be absorbed rapidly. As you will find out below, eating right after a cardio work out means there is a good chance your blood sugar will rise too fast, and the carbohydrates will be stored as body fat.

But, Steen says, after a resistance workout, you’ve just primed the pump with an intense workout (with weights), and you have a one hour window of opportunity to shuttle in nutrients, amino acids, glycogen, and other anabolic nutrients to help repair your damaged muscles. Once this hour passes, a good opportunity to feed your muscles repair fuel (enabling more fat-burning muscle growth) is significantly diminished.

Optimum time to feed your muscles is 15-30 minutes post weight lifting/resistance session.
For this reason, Steen insists the best post workout meal on resistance training days is whey protein and a higher glycemic (fast released, starchy) carbohydrate. You can use a banana as your carb. The potassium in the banana seems to help with recovery. The whey protein is already pre-digested so it is absorbed rapidly.

MonaVie makes an excellent shake great for post workout recovery, called  RVL.

On the other hand, after a cardio workout, your stomach and digestive tract do not function as efficiently, because much of your blood is in the muscles that you just finished training.

After a cardio workout, Steen recommends waiting a good 45-60 minutes, and then consuming a high quality source of whole food protein and vegetable carbohydrate. An example would be a spinach salad and some chicken.

That 45 minutes will be well worth it as your metabolism will still be buring hot after your workout so let it take off as much fat as possible! Don't push it any farther, Steen insists, or your metabolism will actually slow down and enter starvation mode.

Eat this and get healthier

Seen this email going around "Eat Lots of Sweet Potatoes"? Who wrote it first? I'd love to know! In the meantime, interesting facts about fruits and vegetables that will entertain and improve your health:
"It's been said that God first separated the salt water from the fresh, made dry land, planted a garden, made animals and fish... All before making a human. He made and provided what we'd need before we were born.

God left us a great clue as to what foods help what part of our body! God's Pharmacy! Amazing! These are best & more powerful when eaten raw.

A sliced Carrot looks like the human eye. The pupil, iris and radiating lines look just like the human eye... And YES, science now shows carrots greatly enhance blood flow to and function of the eyes.

A Tomato has four chambers and is red. The heart has four chambers and is red. All of the research shows tomatoes are loaded with lycopine and are indeed pure heart and blood food.

Grapes hang in a cluster that has the shape of the heart. Each grape looks like a blood cell and all of the research today shows grapes are also profound heart and blood vitalizing food.

Berries are also blood-shaped and are very antioxidant and good for overall health, none more so than the acai. There is only one source of whole berry acai in an easy to drink juice.

A Walnut looks like a little brain, a left and right hemisphere, upper cerebrums and lower cerebellums. Even the wrinkles or folds on the nut are just like the neo-cortex. We now know walnuts help develop more than three (3) dozen neuron-transmitters for brain function.

Kidney Beans actually heal and help maintain kidney function and yes, they look exactly like the human kidneys.

Celery, Bok Choy, Rhubarb and many more look just like bones. These foods specifically target bone strength. Bones are 23% sodium and these foods are 23% sodium. If you don't have enough sodium in your diet, the body pulls it from the bones, thus making them weak. These foods replenish the skeletal needs of the body.

Avocados, Eggplant and Pears target the health and function of the womb and cervix of the female - they look just like these organs. Today's research shows that when a woman eats one avocado a week, it balances hormones, sheds unwanted birth weight, and prevents cervical cancers. And how profound is this? It takes exactly nine (9) months to grow an avocado from blossom to ripened fruit. There are over 14,000 photolytic chemical constituents of nutrition in each one of these foods. Modern science has only studied and named about 141 of them.

Figs are full of seeds and hang in twos when they grow. Figs increase the mobility of male sperm and increase the numbers of Sperm as well to overcome male sterility.

Sweet Potatoes look like the pancreas and actually balance the glycemic index of diabetics.

Oranges, Grapefruits, and other Citrus fruits look just like the mammary glands of the female and actually assist the health of the breasts and the movement of lymph in and out of the breasts.

Onions look like the body's cells. Today's research shows onions help clear waste materials from all of the body cells. They even produce tears which wash the epithelial layers of the eyes. A working companion, Garlic, also helps eliminate waste materials and dangerous free radicals from the body."

Want to lose weight or lose fat? Second of the top ten fat-burning foods to start eating now

Friday, September 24, 2010

Want to lose weight or lose fat? Second of the top ten fat-burning foods to start eating now

Coconuts and coconut oil.

According to Bruce Fife, ND, over the past 30 years fat consumption has decreased by 11%, and total calorie consumption has decreased by 4%, yet two-thirds of the people who lose weight on low-fat diets gain it all back within one year.

The fact is that eating enough of the right fats is essential for long term weight loss. Fat slows down the emptying of the stomach so that you feel full longer. As a result, you consume fewer calories.

While all fats suppress the appetite, those with Medium Chain Triglycerides are better for weight loss.

A recent study in The Journal of Nutrition shows that replacing your usual fats with MCT fats, like coconut oil, will help you burn more energy, eat less, and that "both animal and human trials suggest a greater satiating effect of medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) compared with long-chain triglycerides (LCT)." In essence, you are satisfied with less food, and burn fat more quickly and easily.

Dr. Andrew Weil notes "that coconut oil is high in lauric acid and contains trace amounts of caprylic acid, both of which appear to have antiviral and antifungal properties, and support immune function," although he reminds us that coconut oil is still a saturated fat, and should be used in moderation. Other studies support the antiviral effect, in that coconut oil has been found to delay, and reduce the spread of viruses, including HIV.

Back to the first of the top ten fat-burning foods.

Dr. Lou Niles tells us how we can reverse the aging process

Are you at all concerned about aging or how about cancer? If you are alive, then on some level you have got to be thinking about your health, your appearance (come on, now), your virility, or your mental state as you get older.

Most of us think there is nothing we can do about aging; it's like death and taxes: inevitable. That may be true, but there is nothing that says we have to sit around and let our brains pickle and our skin prune with no recourse.

Here is a video by Dr. Lou Niles explaining how anti-oxidants enable the body to heal itself. Short and very good!

The frightening link between chronic inflammation and cancer . . . and what you can do about it now - Minneapolis healthy foods | Examiner.com

The frightening link between chronic inflammation and cancer . . . and what you can do about it now - Minneapolis healthy foods Examiner.com

Seven anti-cancer miracle foods

Are six specific foods an exciting new treatment for cancer? Experts at the Angiogenesis Foundation say yes.

At any time, many of us have tiny tumors forming in our bodies, no larger than the tip of a pencil, but our natural cancer-fighting system usually dispatches them before they grow large enough to become a problem. The difference between a small, innocuous tumor and a runaway disease is angiogenesis, the growth of new capillary blood vessels in the body, says Dr. William Li, President and Medical Director of the Angiogenesis Foundation, as well as associates Michelle Hutnik, D.Sc., Roderick Smith M.S., and Vincent Li, M.D.

Angiogenesis is important for healing and reproduction. Normally, the body controls angiogenesis by producing a precise balance of growth and inhibitory factors in healthy tissues. When excessive or insufficient blood vessel growth occurs, many deadly and debilitating conditions, including cancer, skin diseases, age-related blindness, diabetic ulcers, cardiovascular disease, stroke, to name just a few, are the result.

New treatments focus on angiogenesis to fight disease, prolonge the lives of cancer patients, prevent limb amputations, reverse vision loss, and improve general health. Antiangiogenic therapies work by literally starving tumors of blood supply.

The good news is that many foods contain naturally occurring inhibitors of angiogenesis. Eating these particular foods acts to boost the body's existing system that suppresses undesirable angiogenesis. Angiogenesis inhibitors have been discovered from natural sources, including tree bark, fungi, shark muscle and cartilage, sea coral, green tea, and herbs (licorice, ginseng, cumin, garlic). In fact, more than 300 angiogenesis inhibitors have been discovered to date.

At a prestigious TED Conference on February 10, 2010, Dr. William Li said: "We are rating foods based on their cancer-fighting qualities. What we eat is really our chemotherapy three times a day. We discovered that Mother Nature laced a large number of foods and herbs with anti-angiogenesis features."

Of the many angiogenesis inhibiting foods, seven are considered "super-inhibitors." They include:

•Berries (including blueberries and acai berries)
•Garlic
•Soy
•Green Tea
Dark Chocolate
Red Wine
•Parsley

The above mentioned anti-angiogenesis foods proved to be "as effective or more potent in battling cancer" through anti-angiogenesis as approved drugs. Yet unlike conventional drugs, there are no side effects associated with consumption of natural foods and they are vastly more affordable, bringing cancer treatment to people of all walks of life.

Other factors that naturally increase helpful angiogenesis are exercise;
reducing stress hormones like catecholamines and nueropeptides through relaxation and exercise) and getting enough sleep;
quitting smoking (carcinogens found in cigarette smoke stimulate angiogenesis and increase the growth rate of lung cancers. By the way, studies by veterinarians have also shown that secondary smoke found on the fur of cats, increases the risk of oral cancers when cats lick their fur, so if you smoke, wash your hands before eating or touching anyone else) and
losing weight. Fat tissue is highly vascularized, and angiogenesis promotes fat expansion by supplying fat cells with oxygen and nutrients. Obesity increases the risk of various cancers as overweight individuals have more proangiogenic factors that may contribute to tumor growth.

My picks:

Food: MonaVie juices. A 4 ounce serving is equivalent to 13 servings of highly anti-oxidant fruits and vegetables.
Exercise: the Sole F80 Treadmill. Great quality at a reasonable cost, as far as treadmills go.
Stress Reduction and weight loss: Learn to let go of things that aren't going to matter in a year, say what you mean and mean what you say, put yourself first so you can be there for those who matter. Read these tips and more in my book Effortless Weightloss: Small Changes that Lead to Extraordinary Results!
Quit smoking: Most people have difficulty quitting cold-turkey. Good options are hypnotherapy; changing your mindset through good reading like The Alcoholism and Addiction Cure; and talking to your doctor about medication.

Why is acai Dr. Perricone's number one super food?

Dr. Perricone, author of many books including:

The Perricone Weight-Loss Diet: A Simple 3-Part Plan to Lose the Fat, the Wrinkles, and the Years

Forever Young: The Science of Nutrigenomics for Glowing, Wrinkle-Free Skin and Radiant Health at Every Age;

and

Dr. Perricone's 7 Secrets to Beauty, Health, and Longevity: The Miracle of Cellular Rejuvenation

has identified acai has the number one "super food" on the planet.

What's so special about this little berry? In this Oprah.com article, it is reported that Açaí pulp contains:

  • "A remarkable concentration of antioxidants that help combat premature aging, with 10 times more antioxidants than red grapes and 10 to 30 times the anthocyanins of red wine.
  • A synergy of monounsaturated (healthy) fats, dietary fiber and phytosterols to help promote cardiovascular and digestive health.
  • An almost perfect essential amino acid complex in conjunction with valuable trace minerals, vital to proper muscle contraction and regeneration."
This expert continues to say that acai contains a remarkable fatty acid which resembles that of olive oil in that it is rich in monounsaturated oleic acid, which helps omega-3 fish oils penetrate the cell membrane. The two work together to help make cell membranes more supple. By keeping the cell membrane supple, all hormones, neurotransmitter and insulin receptors function more efficiently. This is particularly important because high insulin levels create an inflammatory state, and as we all now know, inflammation causes aging.

So, it's no secret that the açai berry has been prized for centuries as a source of health, energy, and longevity, long known as one of nature’s top superfoods. What's my recommended source?
Without a doubt it's MonaVie.

MonaVie freeze-dried açai is unparalleled in its antioxidant strength. MonaVie’s freeze dried açai boasts more than 15 times the antioxidant capacity of whole blueberries and more than 20 times the antioxidant capacity of whole raspberries!

The science is overwhelming. In a nutshell, pre-clinical research on the freeze-dried açai used in MonaVie products shows it to have:

a. A high antioxidant capacity, especially against superoxide free radicals.
    i. Freeze-dried açai in a SOD assay (SORAC) had one of the highest tested antioxidant capacities of
any fruit or vegetable to fight superoxide free radicals.
b.A high antioxidant capacity, especially against peroxyl free radicals.
c. A nutritional analysis of the freeze-dried açai used in MonaVie products found it to have anthocyanins,
   proanthocyanidins, and other flavonoids.

How does this help you and me? Well, in comparing ORAC scores, four ounces of MonaVie has the equivalent antioxidant capacity of approximately 13 servings of fruits and vegetables.

So, consuming MonaVie helps you to maintain the healthy and active lifestyle you desire. People, like you and me, who regularly consume MonaVie have reported better health and an overall sense of well being.

If it's acai you want, then MonaVie products offer a simple and convenient solution to help meet some of your body’s nutritional needs. MonaVie’s premier açai blend delivers antioxidants and phytonutrients to help maintain and promote good health.

I love it because I drink it every day, and so does my family. I love it so much I became an Independent Distributor for MonaVie (3011082)! I wouldn't tell you that if I didn't stand behind Monavie 100%. Visit me now and try it for yourself!

How to lose a dress size this week - I did it, you can too

I am getting ready for vacation and feeling like I need a boost to get out of  maintenance mode, and lose a few pounds quick so I can pig out without concern on the beach!

Now my book is about making slow changes so they last, and that is what I have done to keep in my size 1's and 3's for the past two years.

This week I want a quick loss that if I maintain - great, but honestly, who cares! I want to get bikini ready for a 6 day vacation during which I can pig out and not worry about my waistline!

For a quick drop, I go to my handy 6- week mini-makeover card that came in my Michael Thurman's 6 Week Body Makeover Kit. I have had this thing since Matthew was born, and I used it to lose the 11 pounds that hung on after his birth. I got it off in about a week, but probably because I started right after his birth. I do the mini-makeover if I want to drop a dress size in 6 days, because it really works.

You do get sick of eating 2-3 ounces of protein (chicken, turkey, or steak) 5-6 times a day (yes you will get sick of it, protein is so filling and I eat every two hours till about 7 p.m.) but you will NEVER be hungry.

You also need to walk (not do heavy-breathing cardio, just a nice, walk) for one hour a day for 6 days. I eat dinner at 7 pm and switch the veggies for a slow-sugar release carb like a red potato or sweet potato, and add a banana or apple. A half an hour later I get on my treadmill and watch a t.v. show for an hour, and I am done!

I have gone down a size already, and I can see my abs again. Normally I hang out at ten lbs. over my "best" weight just because I can maintain that with no purposeful exercise and eating pretty much what I want - although I am a pretty healthy eater - I just eat a lot! So, order it. It isn't cheap, but if you do it, it does work. Note, I said if you do it. You know yourself, if you are going to add it to the stack of work-out dvd's next to your television (guilty) then don't waste your money. Buy my book for a measly $15 and add in a tip a week. Believe me, the weight will come off, just not in a week!

The sneaky new fat in your food: it's worse than trans fats

We have all been trained to watch out for unhealthy fats, so as long as the packaging says "no trans or saturated fats," no problem, right? Wrong.

In an attempt to find a shelf stable non-trans fat, manufacturers are turning to a new modified saturated fat called Interesterified Fat (IE). Research shows that IE, like other saturated fats, profoundly raises the ratio of LDL (bad) cholesterol to HDL (good) cholesterol, which causes plaque to build up on the lining of the arteries. This condition results in a narrowing of the arteries themselves. Arthur Schoenstadt, MD identifies this plaque buildup, called atherosclerosis, a primary agent in the following health risks:

•Angina
•Coronary heart disease
•Heart arrhythmias -- an irregular heart rhythm
•Transient ischemic attack (TIA, or "mini" stroke)
•Heart attack
•Stroke
•Peripheral artery disease
•High blood pressure.

Critics of the new modified fat suggest it is actually worse for your long term health than its trans fat predecessors. Early scientific reports suggest IE Fats raise blood glucose levels higher than trans fats while simultaneously depressing the level of insulin. This could indicate a link between IE Fats and increased incidence of diabetes.

Until more is known, IE fats should be avoided merely for the fact that they are indeed, saturated fats. Check the packaging even when the label claims to have no trans fats. Seek out unsaturated fats instead.

Polyunsaturated fat food sources include fish oil, corn oil, flaxseed oil, hemp oil, pumpkin seed oil, safflower oil, sesame oil, soybean oil,and sunflower oil. Monounsaturated fat is found in high content in olive, peanut, and canola oils, sunflower oil and sesame oil. Other sources include avocados, peanut butter, and many nuts and seeds. Both polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fatty acids are suggested to lower low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol.

Sunflower oil is fairly new to most consumers. It's gaining in popularity as a healthier, and yet tasty, alternative to butter. Tom Smude, makes Premium Cold Pressed Virgin Sunflower Oil on his family farm near Pierz, Minnesota. He says "fish is unbelievable with it."

According to a recent article in the Brainerd County Dispatch, Smude Premium Cold Pressed Virgin Sunflower oil is available at "Christmas Point in Baxter and the Crow Wing Food Co-Op in Brainerd. It's on shelves in St. Cloud, Walker, Little Falls and Nisswa. Prairie Bay restaurant in Baxter is using it for a cooking oil. At Grand Casino, the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe is using the oil - about 15 to 20 gallons a week - for its movie theater popcorn."

Get unstuck and lose weight this week

Sometimes we reach a weight loss plateau, in which it seems that no matter what we do, we can't seem to budge the weight. Typical advice to overcome weight loss plateaus goes along the lines of eating fewer calories, eating more often (sometimes even consuming more calories), or doing more exercise.

What if you have counted calories, upped the exercise, and still the weight won't move? The problem might not be the food in your mouth, it might actually have more to do with the mess in your closet.

Our bodies are the reflection of our inner selves (not just what we put in our selves.) Sometimes the best way to renew our inner selves, is to re-vamp the outer accoutrements that define our lives.

You might not think cleaning a closet can make you lose weight, but when we hold onto the things, people, and activities that don't reflect who we are, or what we cherish and value, then we are constantly seeing ourselves in a mirror of inauthenticity. A jump start to getting un-stuck is to purge the things that are taking up that life-giving energy and excitement that we need to flourish!

Julie Morgenston has written a powerful book called SHED Your Stuff, Change Your Life: A Four-Step Guide to Getting Unstuck, in which she shares a transformative process to release objects and obligations that are weighing you down, in order to give you the freedom to live a lighter, richer life. It's not just about letting things go, it's about discovering who you are and what moves you forward.

Read it. You will be amazed at how good it feels to let go of what you no longer need, including those extra pounds!
